An Apt Comparison?

I received the following forward from sources so far down the line that I really don't know where it came from. It's quite interesting, so take a look...

Inches of rain in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina : 18
Inches of rain in Mumbai (July 26) : 37.1

Population of New Orleans : 484,674
Population of Mumbai : 12,622,500

Deaths in New Orleans within 48 hours of Katrina : 100
Deaths in Mumbai within 48 hours of rains : 37

Number of people evacuated in New Orleans : Entire City...
Number of people evacuated in Mumbai : 10,000

Number of cases of violence in New Orleans : Countless...
Number of cases of violence in Mumbai : None

Time taken for US Army to reach New Orleans : 48 Hours
Time taken for Indian Army to reach Mumbai : 12 Hours

Status of New Orleans 48 Hours later : Waiting for relief, army and electricty
Status of Mumbai 48 Hours later : Back on its feet and is business is as usual

Let me make it very clear : I'm not pointing fingers anywhere nor do I agree or disagree with antyhing. I just think it's interesting.

What do you think?

Nice post and great blog. I've seen this in a mail before but with the varying font colours you managed to bring out the comparison really well.

I'd like to say... that while all the statistics say what they say, and despite the fact that I am very pro-India and not-so-pro-America, this is an unfair comparison, because Mumbai suffered floods.
New Orleans suffered a hurricane.

There is a sort of difference. New Orleans wasn't affected by the water so much as the wind and the damage that the hurricane caused.

I'm not trying to undermine the graveness of what happpened in Mumbai, but it wasn't a hurricane. It was torrential rain, but it wasn't a hurricane.

I have seen this at many places and my opinion is that the person who wrote up this list has very poor taste besides suffering from inferiority complex. Trying to compare uncomparable events and throwing mud during a tragedy....

I totally agree. However, unlike Kaushik I am fairly pro-America so for me it's a bit more offensive.

You should read the difference between a black being "voilent" and "stealing" and a white "picking up some essential provisions from a devastated store using all tools availbile at hand".

-- antarius's comment is perfectly valid... yes. But nevertheless, for a developed nation, America certainly did neglect it's "poorer" and "stupider" parts.

They probably overlooked the fact that they do have poorer and stupider parts
